AE’s UbD retreats offer participants:

SMALL GROUP SETTING

To create a highly-personalized learning environment, each retreat is capped at no more than 14 attendees. This small group setting allows us to tailor the retreat to the roles, needs, and expertise of our attendees.

DEEP UBD EXPERTISE

Authentic Education was founded by the late Grant Wiggins, co-author of the UbD experience. AE President and retreat facilitator, Mike Matthews, is a National Board Certified teacher with extensive experience working with educators across all grade levels and subject areas.

HIGHLY COLLABORATIVE ENVIRONMENT

Our retreats are structured to break down silos by having participants collaborate organically across grade levels and disciplines in order to strengthen the connections that make understanding more relevant and engaging for students.

ONGOING SUPPORT

In order to ensure long-term success implementing units created using the UbD framework, registration includes a one-on-one online coaching session with an Mike Matthews in the months that follow the workshop.

At AE, we do PD the way PD should be.

We deliver highly effective professional development that:

Models the types of learning we value in our classroom.
Leverages the expertise and meets the needs of those in the room.

Supports teachers as they apply what they’ve learned.

Retreat Attendee Testimonials

Delivering on our promise of “PD the way PD should be”

I left feeling inspired to do the work I love with valuable insights that I will implement into my teaching + planning. It really did feel like a retreat. Mike’s attention to detail is incredible – from an incredible reference journal, to the best food + snacks. Mike is amazing at what he does! Thank you for a fabulous two days that were so impactful. Feeling grateful that I had the opportunity to attend + learn from Mike + others in attendance. Thank you!

2024 Retreat Attendee, Grade 1 Teacher, The Hamlin School

The Summer 2024 UbD Retreat in Washington, DC was a refresher course for me, ably led by Mike. Each session had the right balance of presentation, work time, and food! The online resources in the Padlet were well-organized and easy to follow. These included slides and templates used by Mike during the workshop, as well as logistical information about the local area.

Because the enrollment was limited to eight, Mike could skillfully guide everyone as we developed our separate projects. We also had time to share our work with others in the cohort. Additionally, I was part of a group of three English teachers from my school. Our conversations both during and after the workshop brought new insights into our courses and shared goals.

As a veteran educator of 38 years, I strongly encourage teachers, curriculum teams, and administrators to attend a UbD Retreat. You will appreciate the time for learning and reflecting on teaching with your colleagues and other professionals.

MARC

2024 Retreat Attendee, English teacher, Woodberry Forest School, Virginia

My colleague and I had the privilege of spending two days in July 2024 with Mike Matthews and a group of educators from peer schools to take a deep dive into Understanding by Design (UbD). This summer retreat was an opportunity to engage in meaningful and collaborative work that ultimately yielded a complete unit of study, rooted in the research-based best practices of backwards planning. The intentional planning that is the backbone of UbD was evident in the ebb and flow of our days as adult learners; we would learn student-centered tenets of designing learning experiences, reflect on what we had learned, and then immediately put that information to use.

All along the way, we leaned on Mike’s guidance and the shared wisdom of our peers, whose diverse backgrounds and roles within schools made for richer conversations and genuine connections. Attending the retreat with a colleague of course means that we were able to bring our learning back to our campus, and revisit our materials and experiences as we implemented the unit that was created. Mike’s deep knowledge of all things UbD is what I came for; his expertise and ability to bring folks together around a shared goal that make him such a gifted facilitator were the icing on the cake! We were so impressed with his depth of knowledge, his skill at facilitating and guiding, and the power of UbD, that we were excited to engage Authentic Education in a year-long curriculum project with our entire faculty. I would highly recommend this retreat to educators in academic roles within a school.

Frequently asked questions

Why a Retreat?

Through our extensive experience working with teachers and schools, we have identified key factors that contribute to the long-term success of planning with the UbD framework. We know that when teachers design curriculum collaboratively, learn in smaller groups that allow for one-on-one expert coaching, and receive ongoing implementation support, they are more successful not just designing their own units long term but are better equipped to be teacher leaders in their own school. We’ve designed the retreat opportunity to help set up teachers for long term success in their classrooms and schools.

Who will be leading the retreats?

The 2025 summer retreats will be led by Mike Matthews, President of Authentic Education. Mike is a National Board Certified Teacher who has worked in both public and independent schools. He spent 7 years as the Director of Curriculum and Innovation at an Independent School in the San Francisco Bay Area. In his 9 years with AE, Mike has worked with educators around the world to design rich and engaging curriculum across a range of subjects and grade levels.

How small are the retreats?

To ensure a high-quality and highly-personalized retreat with significant individualized coaching and support, the retreats are capped at 14 attendees.

Is it just for teachers? I’m in a leadership role. Can I attend?

From Curriculum Directors to DEI Leaders to Division Directors, we’ve had folks in non-teaching roles attend past retreats. The retreat is designed around creating a “ready-to-try” unit. We welcome all K-12 educators who are interested in creating a UbD unit to attend. During the summer of 2024, nearly 25% of attendees were not in classroom roles.

Do I need any UbD experience? What if I’ve already planned units using the UbD framework?

UbD experience is welcomed and not required. The small group format allows us to tailor instruction and support to meet all attendees where they are, whether they’re new to UbD or have extensive experience designing curriculum using the framework.

What will the retreat days look like?

The retreats will run from 9am-4pm each day, with breakfast available starting at 8:30am and a one-hour lunch break.

The daily schedule will be:

8:30am – Breakfast

9:00am – Morning Session

12:00pm – Lunch

1:00pm – Afternoon Session

4:00pm – End of day

I can’t make it in person. Can I attend virtually?

Due to the small group and collaborative nature of the retreats, we require folks to attend in-person. We do periodically offer virtual trainings as well, so if you’re interested in participating, please sign up for our newsletter at authenticeducation.org/blog/
